A Skeksis who chose a different path in life, skekSa rejects the decadence and backbiting of the castle-dwellers. She genuinely prefers the company of the Sifan Gelfling she is the patron of over her own species, chose the roving, active life of a sailor, and only returns to the Castle when she has to.
In a word, skekSa is complicated. While she isn't as nakedly evil as most of the other Skeksis and defaults to neutral alignment under her own devices - she would rather be left alone and is not interested in fighting for the Emperor - she isn't a good person either. While her affable traits are genuine and she can sincerely care for people as much as a Skeksis can, she's also manipulative, controlling, and selfish at her worst, and can turn very nasty on a dime when she feels personally betrayed. For someone who puts on a calm, reasonable face, she has a frightening temper, and is at her most unpredictable and dangerous when she's truly desperate.
Unlike most Skeksis she disapproves of the use of essence, frowns on the excesses and politics of the Court, and is more aware of the Darkening's threat due to her closeness to the sea. Her attitude towards most of the other Skeksis is contempt - she dislikes the Emperor especially, looks down on the Hunter for allowing skekSo to use him and sacrificing his independence, and despises the Chamberlain. She's more like them than she would ever admit, but there nevertheless are a few lines she won't cross concerning gross abuse of the environment, overusing Thra's natural resources, and their gratuitous decadence.
Altruism isn't generally a Skeksis trait, so if skekSa does something for other characters she's often looking for something to benefit herself in some way, though that isn't necessarily malicious. She's practical, preferring persuasion and bargaining to get what she wants over violence: war and making enemies are bad for business. More than anything, she's a wild card who puts her own self-preservation first, and her motherly manner hides a shrewd pirate with a capacity for cruelty and frightening ruthlessness. Redeeming her is possible, but it won't necessarily be easy either, and how approachable she is depends on her canonpoint.
